Pinawala Elephant Orphanage was founded in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department. This 24 acres large elephant orphanage is also a breeding place for elephants, twenty elephants were born since 1984, and it has the greatest herd of elephants in the world.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northwest of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawalla is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 37 males and 51 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.
After lunch proceed to Sigiriya
Sigiriya (Lion Rock, Sinhalese – සීගිරිය, pronounced see-gee-REE-yah) is located in the central Matale District of the Central Province, Sri Lanka in an area dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa the site was selected by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 AD) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock, he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure —Sīhāgiri, the Lion Rock. The capital and the royal palace were abandoned after the king’s death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.
Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning. It is the most visited historic site in Sri Lanka.

Named as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991, Dambulla Cave Temple also named the Golden Temple of Dambulla is the prime and best-preserved cave temple compound on the island. Placed in Dambulla, Dambulla Cave Temple has 5 important caves, each cave contains statues of the Buddha and historic artwork describing the Buddha’s life. The largest cave carries some 48 statues of Lord Buddha. with some statues of Hindu Gods., when Hinduism took root in Sri Lanka and started influencing the arts Dambulla Cave Temple is a good example of it. The history of the caves goes back to the 2nd or 1st century B.C., when King Valagam Bahu who was escaping the invading army that drove him out of Anuradhapura, took refuge in these caves
After visiting Dambulla cave temple proceed to Kandy- on the way to Kandy visit spice gardens
Kandy is a major city in Sri Lanka, located in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. It is the second-largest city in the country after Colombo. It was the last capital of the ancient kings era of Sri Lanka.[1] The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is both an administrative and religious city and is also the capital of the Central Province. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988
Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

Toddy Tapping means collecting juice from the coconut tree’s flower. It is a great experience to see how these people collect this juice (spirit).
Kosgoda is a famous turtle hatchery operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka. Founded in 1981 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles from destruction. The hatcheries pay the fishermen for eggs that they collect at the beach. Visitors are shown the massive tanks filled with newborn baby Turtles. Which are 2-4 days old, and are released safely.
Madhu River flows across Balapitiya (approx 80kms down south of Colombo) and is one of the most frequently visited perfect attractions for nature lovers in Sri Lanka. Madhu river boasts of having 64 small islands spotted along her path and most of which are covered with mangroves.
The city is famous for its masks and puppets. The traditional masks are carved from light Balsa like Kaduru wood (Nux vomica). Kaduru trees grow in the wetlands near the paddy fields. The wood is smoke-dried for a week in preparation. The hand-carved and hand-painted masks for traditional dance, dramas are famous in Ambalangoda.
During the period of the British (1815-1948) in Sri Lanka, a rest house was built for the advantage of British servants. Today the Bentota is a tropical coastal land that provides the full range of water sports on the beach.
